Descending Endlessly
by Ivan Fernandez
The curtains on the houses near the church and
beside the paved road were intriguing, as Corleone was curious about what was
beyond those walls around him. It was dark and windy when the Corleone walks
the lonely paved road before the dawn. The touch of the wind in all directions
made him tremble in the chillness of the night. The empty bench beside the
paved road, the street light nearby and the buildings all over the place,
brought him some memories of the yesterday he once knew. He looked at his
surroundings and noticed that no one was around to hear him scream. Corleone
then walked to the church that was somehow still open in the middle of the
night. He stood in the middle of the church where the leaves outside its walls
were descending endlessly without any sentiment on anything whatsoever. There
was a large box in the middle of the church, but he decided not to go near it,
for he fears to see what was within it. From the distance, the moon lights up
the sea, and the water was crashing heavy waves onto the shore. Together with
the falling leaves and the flashing of the heavy waves onto the beach, both of
those noises gave him a chilly feeling down inside his chest. He looked around
and realized that he was in his own head, inside a situation that he thought
was not possible.
Reality is told
in the place you would not expect, as
Corleone thought about what his parents used to say, we dream of what we often desire in life.
Corleone then stood, and run away from the church to
what seems was a mile on his head, for in that moment he can still do what he
no longer can. Only to reach a city square where all stalls were open and he
decided to enter a place swarming with people he once recognized and met in his
life. The impression of not being able to stop the idea, that he changed
everyone’s life around him, brought him down to his knees and wondered whether
all of it paid off. He looked at all
those people and suddenly a thunder struck from behind and onto the paved road.
Standing still, he looked at it for a while and looked at the mark it made on
the street down onto the pavement, and when he returned back to look at the
familiar people he once knew, no one was longer around not even the stalls were
open. A feeling of a huge pound was felt on his back chest, near enough the
heart, he looked around but no one was there to stab him. The feeling, the
agony made Corleone woke up, in the middle of the night and where he realized
he was in his home.
I’ve always
wanted to explore the world,
he thought.
Days passed by, as he had his dream of being in his
paradise, he then contacted everyone to come and see him, but no one replied.
Upon spreading the message that he wants to see each and one of them, Corleone
realized that people no longer needed him. But still… he waited and waited
outside his window, and no one came to visit him in his home, not even one. He
then thought for a moment and realized that he gave everything and anything
that he owes, to the people that he thinks needed it the most. At the end
realizing that no one stood by his side, he ordered a large box in front of
him, Corleone opened it, stood inside it realized it was time to return back to
his own reality permanently.
